Phonics & Writing (Grades 1-3)

Service Description

As schools have moved further away from introducing students to structured literacy and grammar, we believe it is more important than ever to make these fundamental skills accessible to our community! The balanced literacy instruction required in most schools today is statistically far less successful than traditional Phonics instruction, which is especially problematic when we consider that students not performing at grade level by the conclusion of Grade 3 are considerably less likely to graduate high school. Additionally, the first subject dropped in many classrooms today is systematic grammar instruction. Through this course, we introduce structured literacy and grammatical principles to bolster student's ELA performance. The first half of our session will focus on Phonics to expand reading/spelling capabilities. We'll cover the most frequent letter sound combinations, spelling rules, syllable types and their relationship to vowels, as well as decoding/encoding strategies. Students will also learn methods for practicing spelling that are more efficient and intentional than simple repetition. The second half of our session will be a systematic instruction of sentence structure, grammar rules, and vocabulary acquisition. Students will explore how an understanding of grammar and writing structure influences reading comprehension/fluency. We'll incorporate reading and writing practice with an emphasis on using grammatical principles to support clarity.
