Service Description

Everyone recognizes that the arithmetic foundations studied in early years are critical for future success in math, but were you aware that there is a second period of crucial development in mathematics for students? This occurs during their transition to algebra. The algebraic concepts students master in these middle years won’t cease to be central once they finish studying algebra, but in fact, these concepts will form the bedrock that every future math class they take will be built upon. A thorough understanding of these algebraic principles is therefore absolutely necessary for students to succeed in high school or beyond. In this course, we’ll follow the traditional progression of algebraic curriculums incorporating overviews of all operations with real numbers, number theory, ratio and proportion, coordinate planes, and geometry. We’ll provide multiple, alternative explanations of key principles to give students a deeper, more well rounded understanding of the concepts they’re currently studying. Students are encouraged to bring clarification and exploratory questions to class so we can support their critical engagement with these ideas. In order to help students progress from simply memorizing strategies towards truly understanding and applying algebraic thinking, we will provide opportunities for creative problem solving and take time to explore the overarching connections between various units of study.
